Is it possible for me to take a break from my studies?
The question refers to the enrollment regulations Steinbeis University.
- Students may submit a written application for a leave of absence to the responsible examination board. Leave of absence is granted for at least one semester. A leave of absence can usually be granted for up to two semesters, which can also be taken consecutively, if there are appropriate reasons.
- A maximum of one leave of absence for two semesters may be granted within the standard period of study.
- The reason for the leave of absence must be supported by appropriate documentation. Reasons for a leave of absence can be:
(a) Illness
(b) Military or civilian service
(c) Support for close relatives in need of care within the meaning of the Caregiver Leave Act.
(d) Maternity protection in accordance with the Maternity Protection Act
(e) Death in the family
(f) Other equivalent reasons approved by the Review Committee.
- During the period of the leave of absence, the right to attend courses and to complete credits is suspended. The time of the leave of absence is not taken into account when determining the period of study.
- For periods shorter than one semester, these are leaves of absence, which are decided by the departments. Notification to the university's central office is not required for this purpose. Even in the case of shorter periods, the maximum period of leave of absence, including the leave of absence, may not exceed twelve months within the standard period of study.
- Students' rights as members of the University continue during the leave of absence. Applying for a semester of leave interrupts the student's studies.
- Upon written application to the examination board, a failed examination can be repeated during the leave of absence. As a rule, it is not possible to take examinations for other reasons.
- Semesters of leave are not counted as semesters of study.
- The application must be submitted before the requested leave of absence period. A retroactive application is not possible.
