How can competencies gained outside of higher education be acknowledged and credited?

The question refers to the Steinbeis University Recognition and Crediting Statutes.

  • Competencies from knowledge and skills acquired outside of higher education can be credited within the framework of a case-by-case decision, provided that equivalence with study content, study achievements (workload) and credits of the intended degree has been established. These credits may be credited up to a maximum of half (50%) of the credit points provided for the degree program. Even with the crediting, it must be ensured that an equally good competence development is possible, in particular on the basis of an equivalent project.
  • If credits are awarded for work completed outside of the university, these are always shown as "credited" on the certificate.
  • The recognition or crediting of achievements is carried out ex officio by the responsible examination board. The student must submit a written application as well as the documents required for the recognition or crediting of the performance to be recognized or credited by means of corresponding written evidence (e.g. transcripts, module certificates, module descriptions, certificates, etc.).
  • Credit can be given for non-university competencies acquired, for example, through vocational training and continuing education, if they are equivalent in content, scope and requirements to those of the degree program for which credit is requested. The greatest possible similarity is considered positive, differences negative.
  • The student's application must be submitted to the responsible examination board as of the start of the study program, but before the start of the examination procedure. The written application must be accompanied by all the documents required for proof of recognition or credit. The recognition or crediting procedure begins with the date of receipt of the application by the responsible examination board.
  • Subsequent recognition or credit in the event that an examination has not been passed is not possible. The decision on the procedure is to be finalized within a period of ten weeks after application and submission of all required documents.
  • The results of the recognition or crediting procedure will be communicated to the applicants in writing by the responsible examination board.
  • In the case of a positive decision in the recognition procedure, a certificate of recognition is issued. The certificate of recognition contains the type of procedure, the module name, the level of competence, the number of ECTS credits and, if applicable, the grade.
  • In the case of a negative decision in the recognition procedure, the burden of proof that an application does not meet the requirements for recognition lies with the responsible examination board. In the case of a negative decision in the crediting procedure, the burden of proof that an application meets the requirements for crediting lies with the applicant. The applicant will be informed of the decision with written reasons.
